Pub Quiz / New Guilty Concert - Tanner's June 6th, 2014

Round One - World Cup
  1. I was born on this day in 1956 and played football for the Polish national team for many years. In fact, I played in 4 different world cups and have played in 21 World Cup Final matches tying with Uwe Seeler and Diego Maradona for the third most appearances ever. Who. Am. I?
    Wladyslaw Zmuda
  2. Ok, one more Poland related question. Poland is one of only two teams to have score five goals in a World Cup game, the other being Switzerland of all countries. Anyways, which country did Poland lose to 6-5 in the 1938 tournament?
    Brazil
  3. Though soon to be the most populous nation on Earth, India has never appeared in the World Cup Finals. Many blame what happened in 1950 the only year they qualified for the finals as the reason it has never caught on there. Tell me, what is the popular urban myth surrounding the reason the Indian football team refused the invitation to the 1950 World Cup Finals. Here's a hint: they refused to wear something that Fifa rules stipulated they must on field.
    Wear shoes
  4. There have been 19 World Cups to date, tell me how many have been won by the host country?
    Six
  5. Which national team holds the record for most losses in the World Cup final tournament with 24? I'm only giving you one hint, they're from the America's
    Mexico
  6. Who were the only team to remain unbeaten in the last World Cup tournament in 2010? Once again, you only get one hint, you won't believe the answer, unless it's your precious.
    New Zealand
  7. In 2010, FIFA selected the only candidate deemed a 'high-risk' option in choosing Qatar. Qatar operates what's know as a kafala system which translates more or less to guardianship but really means to take away all imported workers rights, losing their passports and turning them into slaves. Without any safety provisions, these workers have been dying on the World Cup construction sites by the scores. Tell me, plus or minus 250, how many of these people working on World Cup infrastructure in Qatar are projected to have died by the time the games are played in 2022? For reference, eight have died in the Brazil preparations.
    4000
  8. Well, the choice of Qatar was not so risky for the members pocketbooks of the FIFA selection committee and neither were the previous three choices of South Africa, Brazil and Russia. Corruption in FIFA is endemic and has always been one of those things we knew but documents discovered in the past week paint the most graphic picture revealed to date. How much, or maybe better, how little do you think disgraced Qatari football official Mohamed Bin Hammam paid in bribes to secure the necessary votes for the 2022 World Cup. In US dollars, how much does it cost to buy the World Cup for your country. The nearest (½ of the teams) will get a point.
    $5 million

Round 2 is June 6th in history

    1. On this day, June 6th in 1664, the city now known as New York was renamed in honor of the Duke of York after British forces seized control of Manhatten. Tell me, what was New York previously known as.
    New Amsterdam
    2. Perhaps, no, definitely the most important event that occurred on this day in history was the D-Day invasion of Normandy by the Allied forces, June 6th, 1944. Today marks the 70th anniversary of the landing of mostly British, American and Canadian troops on five different beaches. For the point you need to name three of the five beaches. Bonus points for any additional.
    Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword
    3. Ok, because of the importance of the D-day invasion, we get two questions about it. Plus there's 2 points up for grabs in this question. First, we call it D-day today but at the time the armed forces assigned a codename to the Allied invasion of northwest Europe. What was that codename. Second, what does the 'D' in D-day stand for? Two possible points, what was the codename to the operation and what does the d in d-day signify?
    Operation Overlord / Day
    4. The United States features four main sports leagues, the NHL, NBA, NFL and MLB. Can you tell me which one was founded under a slightly different name on this day in 1946 and for the full point you'll need the full name of the league.
    NBA – National Basketball Association
    5. On this day, June 6th, 1984, one of the most popular games of all time was released. Tetris, how many different shapes do the blocks come in in the original Tetris (tetris, tetra, 4)
    7 - seven
    6. Once again, urban legend has it that Levi Strauss made his first pair of jeans on this day in 1853. Tell me, from what southern French city did the twill fabric called denim take its name.
    Nimes
    7. Also on this day in 1933, America combined two of their passions as the first drive-in movie theater opened in Camden, New Jersey opening the door to a generation of teenage boys and girls to experience the wonder of Hollyood and discover each others bodies in the privacy of their cars. Tell me what was the price of admission per car and per person at a drive in on June 6th, 1933?
    25 cents
    8. Our final question about June 6th leads us into the music round to follow. Who's to say what the first rock and roll song was but, we can say that the first rock and roll record to top the US pop charts was Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley. All you need to do is give me the year in which this hit topped the US pop charts.
    1955

Name the American sketch comedy show which has launched the career of dozens of comedians.
Saturday Night Live

2. Staying with the tash theme, while there are dozens of terms used for mustaches from cookie duster to dirt squirrel, lip toupe, soup strainer and snot mop, there have been only four American presidents who sported a Mr. Tickler. I'll give you one point for each American president you can name who regularly wore a mustache.
Chester A. Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, and William H. Taft

3. I mustache you a few more questions. Getting away from mustaches but staying with presidents what is the only surname shared by an American President and a British Prime Minister.

4. Staying with the British/American theme, 50 years ago this past February, a little band from Liverpool hopped the pond to America so they could become famous, thus kicking off the British Invasion. Not including their famous rooftop concert, these Beatles played their last live concert just two short years later in Candlestick Park. Question four is, in what US city is Candlestick Park where the Beatles played their last live show and you can go buy a Ben & Jerry's ice cream in the original shop just off Haight and Ashbury.

5. While the Oxford English Dictionary went for the culturally relevant word 'selfie' as their choice for 2013 Word of the Year, the American Dialect Society went in another direction, instead choosing an existing word that has suddenly found new use in the age of internet induced cognitive decline. Formerly a simple subordinating conjunction, this word seems more and more like a preposition as it is being used to introduce nouns, adjectives or other parts of speech. Tell me, what was the American Dialect Society's 2013 word of the year? This past year, the very old word was chosen as it exploded with new grammatical possibilities in informal online use.

C)How big the country is and the amount of time you guys are willing to drive. I had a friend who drove for 16 hours to visit family for the weekend. It's baffling.
D)Not been able to drink alcohol until you are 21 but you can join the army and vote at 18.
